Course Overview

This hands-on training course explores installation, configuration, and management of VMware vSphere®, which consists of VMware ESXi™ and VMware vCenter Server™. The course is based on ESXi 5.0 and vCenter Server 5.0. Completion of this course satisfies the prerequisite for taking the VMware® Certified Professional 5 exam.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, you should gain an understanding of the functionality in vSphere 5 and be able to do the following:

• Install and configure ESXi
• Install and configure vCenter Server components
• Configure and manage ESXi networking and storage using vCenter Server deploy, manage, and migrate virtual machines
• Manage user access to the VMware infrastructure
• Use vCenter Server to monitor resource usage
• Use vCenter Server to increase scalability
• Use VMware vCenter™ Update Manager to apply ESXi patches
• Use vCenter Server to manage higher availability and data protection

Instructor: John Vos

John Vos is a Professor of Information Technology at West Kentucky Community and Technical College since 1989. An M.B.A. Graduate of Murray State University with 18 graduate hours above the Masters in Computer Science from the University of Kentucky. John holds industry certifications as a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE), Cisco Certified Network Associate CCNA, Cisco Certified Instructor Trainer, VMware Certified Professional (VCP) V4.1, and V5.0. Mr. Vos has been instrumental in providing IT educational programs that impact Kentucky by acting as a co-pi on a major National Science Foundation grant to develop the Kentucky IT Center (KITCenter). Its primary goal is to assist in building Kentucky’s capacity for IT educators at the secondary and post-secondary level. John has contributed to the development of the KCTCS state wide Information Technology curriculum program and transfer programs to Kentucky’s regional universities. He has developed on-line live teaching methods and fully remote virtual lab facilities for enhancing student learning. Students participate from as far away as Germany, Japan, and Iraq. John also serves on the advisory board for the Paducah/McCracken County Telecommunications and Information Systems Authority and the Advisory board for Murray State University Telecommunications Systems Management program.
